Chang Chen
Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, and Chief Surgeon

Dr. Chang Chen is a thoracic surgeon and the director of Tongji University-affiliated Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital. He received his medical degree and Ph.D. degree from Nanjing University and Soochow University, respectively. He was trained at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, Missouri (2002-2003, sponsored by China Scholarship Council). And he has more than 22 years of experience as a thoracic surgeon and devoted his clinical practice to diagnosing and treating patients with thoracic disease.

He is now the Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Tongji University, Director of the Shanghai Lung Transplantation Engineering and Technology Research Center, and Director of the Thoracic Surgery Clinical Research Center of Tongji University. He received Guest Professorship at Lanzhou University and a Royal Colleges of Surgeons (FRCS) Fellowship.

Professor Chen graduated from Nanjing University with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and Master of Surgery. He furthered his academic pursuits by obtaining Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery from Soochow University.

Professor Chen received specialized training at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and earned certification in Cardiothoracic Surgery, along with licensure in the same field. During his career, Professor Chen has undertaken academic endeavors as a visiting scholar at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and Marie Lannelongue Hospital in France. He has been dedicated to advancing innovative techniques in thoracic surgery, precise treatments for thoracic tumors, and the dissemination of core technologies related to lung transplantation. His professional focus also centers on clinical and translational research related to thoracic oncology.

Professor Chen is the Chief Surgeon of Thoracic Surgery at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital. He is responsible for establishing and overseeing the Clinical Research Center of Thoracic Surgery at Tongji University, the "Key Respiratory Disease Center" in Shanghai, and the Shanghai Lung Transplantation Engineering and Technology Research Center. Professor Chen leads a team that has initiated over 20 clinical research projects in the fields of lung cancer and thoracic surgery, both nationally and internationally, achieving results that are at the forefront of global medical advancements.

Professor Chen has pioneered advancements in tracheal and bronchial surgical techniques, precise treatment for thoracic tumors, and the establishment and promotion of core technology platforms for lung transplantation. He was honored as one of the "Eminent Chinese Doctors of 2020" and has consistently ranked among the "Top 10 Tracheal Surgeons" for six consecutive years in the "Top 100 Chinese Doctors " list. Professor Chen has addressed several challenges in the treatment of thoracic tumors, including the development and implementation of "valve"-shaped surgeries, offering curative surgical opportunities for patients previously considered inoperable. He also introduced the "Y"-shaped tracheal stent, providing life-saving solutions for patients with airway constriction. Professor Chen has pioneered an intelligent diagnosis and treatment method for lung cancer, creating an intelligent radiological system for automatic identification of pulmonary lesions, distinguishing between benign and malignant tumors, and assessing lymph node metastasis status. He has also established multi-omics-based predictive models for lung cancer prognosis, enabling precise guidance for surgery, neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy decisions.
